“Traveling is my passion. I spent a semester in Brussels and from there went all around the world. I pride myself in never tanning, nor have I been to a tanning bed in my life. That doesn’t mean I don’t get pressured to; my friends’ extent of traveling is to the tanning bed. To them, being tan is their way of looking their best, especially for social events. It’s hard for girls my age to not think that way when celebrities have a tan or bronzed look. If celebrities are pale, they are making a bold statement in Hollywood rather than remaining true to their natural color.
I chose not to tan because I’ve seen my friend’s mother battle melanoma. I have seen sorority sisters’ moles removed for skin cancer. It changed how I see skin cancer forever.
My spots tell a story. I have freckles that appear on my nose only in the summer and I have to say that I love them. It reminds me of carefree times at the beach and spending time with friends by the water, but mostly traveling. People are sometimes ashamed of their freckles, but to me it is a reminder of my adventures.”
